November 19, 2018 (Monday) - It's a hop, skip, and a jump from Los Angeles to Athens to Nashville. Thayer Sarrano resurfaced on Saturday at the Nowhere Bar in Athens, a mere two days after her appearance at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. Offering a solo set, accompanied by her foot-pedal-operated floorgan ("floor organ" -- it's a Sarrano musicological neologism), she opened for, and then accompanied, Parker Gispert. Gispert has a new solo record out as of last week, entitled Sunlight Tonight. That piece of wax features performances by a host of musical companions, including Thayer Sarrano herself. Gispert is well known, of course, as the frontman for The Whigs, a power trio from Athens, GA. For years now, we have been regaling ourselves with their performance of "Right Hand on My Heart," as found on The David Letterman Show. (You know you have a good drummer on your hands when you can physically see the rhythm, as we clearly can, on this Letterman clip.) Gispert is venturing now into new sonic territories, exploring musical pockets that would not have fit so easily within The Whigs template. Those newfoundlands include even a majestic and celestial harp on "Life in the Goldilocks Zone." There are different ways of being bold. You can be bold with a hammer. You can be bold with a whisper. This is what is known as being exceptionally bold, and with a harp, while dressed in mohair. Check out the video for the punchy new single "Too Dumb To Love Anyone." And, now, this evening, at The Basement, in Nashville, Thayer Sarrano again opens for, and accompanies Gispert. She then proceeds onward to a spate of shows on the West Coast in early December. Hop.
